The beginning: 2009 February. At this point I was struggling with the decision of whether I should build an observatory or an ARK. It rained practically continuously for the first three months of construction.

I have cleared about 1.5 acres over a period of about 3 months. This effort took about 200 chain saw sharpenings and a lot of timber burns. Some of the piles are still visible here.

The hole for the pier is five feet deep (to bedrock) and was quite a challenge to keep dry during the concrete forming and pouring.

This shows the forms for the concrete pier. The base of the pier is a 5'x5'x5' block with the remainder in the shape of a ziggurat. It is well reinforced with steel. The concrete in the upper portion was mixed by hand and placed with lifting buckets up

This is a view of the top of the pier with the J-bolts to be used for mounting the Lesueur metal pipe pier/mount. the top of the concrete is 9' above the slab to be level with the finished second floor.
